Police launch probe as tensions rise in Murshidabad

Murshidabad, April 27 (H.S.): Tension gripped the Lalgoa area of West Bengal’s Murshidabad district after the body of the husband of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was recovered from the Bhagirathi river, with the family alleging foul play.
The deceased has been identified as Nazir Sheikh (49), husband of TMC leader Hasen Banu Bibi from Lalgoa block. His body was recovered from the Baikunthapur area in Raghunathganj on Monday morning.
According to police and local sources, Sheikh had left his home in Fakirpara under Lalgoa police station limits around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. While he usually travelled by bicycle, he reportedly left on foot that day. When he failed to return home by evening, family members began searching for him. CCTV footage later showed him in the Raghunathganj area around 8:40 p.m.
On Monday morning, locals spotted a body floating in the Bhagirathi river and alerted the police. The body was subsequently identified by family members.
Murder Allegation
The victim’s son, Nadeem Sheikh, alleged that his father was strangled to death and his body was later dumped in the river. The family also stated that Sheikh was actively involved in social work and often mediated local disputes, which may have led to enmity with some individuals.
Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and initiated a detailed investigation.
Investigation Underway
Officials said it is too early to determine whether the death was accidental or a case of murder. All possible angles, including personal and political factors, are being examined.
The incident has led to tension in the area as authorities continue their probe.
