Government revises dues and defers repayment schedule, easing financial burden on telecom operator

New Delhi, May 1 (H.S.): Telecom major Vodafone Idea has received significant relief in the long-standing Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues case, with the central government waiving ₹23,649 crore from its total liability and extending the repayment timeline.
According to an exchange filing, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has recalculated the company’s AGR dues up to December 2025 at ₹64,046 crore, down from the earlier estimate of ₹87,695 crore. The revision follows Supreme Court directives and provides substantial financial relief to the debt-laden telecom operator.
Extended Repayment Timeline
In a major boost, Vodafone Idea will not be required to make immediate payments. As per the revised plan, the company will begin repayments from FY 2031-32, paying a minimum of ₹100 crore annually for the first four years.
The remaining dues will be cleared in six equal annual installments between FY 2035-36 and FY 2040-41. This effectively gives the company a grace period of several years before major repayment obligations begin.
Market Impact
Market experts believe the relief could improve investor sentiment around Vodafone Idea. With stock markets closed on Friday due to Maharashtra Day, analysts expect the company’s shares to react positively when trading resumes.
On the previous trading day, Vodafone Idea shares had closed 0.68% lower at ₹10.22 on the BSE.
Financial Breathing Space
The revised AGR framework significantly reduces immediate financial pressure on the company, allowing it to focus on operations and long-term sustainability.
The relief is seen as a crucial step in supporting the telecom sector, particularly Vodafone Idea, which has been grappling with high debt and intense competition.
