Accused caught accepting ₹6,000 during trap operation; case registered under anti-corruption law

Chandigarh, April 16: The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested a school principal in Ludhiana district for allegedly accepting a bribe from a former student seeking his Class 10 certificate.
The accused, identified as Gurmeet Singh, was serving as Principal at Camp Khalsa Senior Secondary School in Ajitsar Mohi, a government-aided institution.
Complaint and Allegations
According to officials, the action followed a complaint by a resident of Mohi village who had passed Class 10 during the COVID-19 period but had not received his original certificate. Despite applying online for a duplicate, the document was not issued.
The complainant then approached the school principal for assistance. It is alleged that the principal demanded ₹15,800 for facilitating the certificate and had already taken ₹10,000 earlier.
Officials noted that the official fee for a duplicate certificate is significantly lower, ranging between ₹900 and ₹2,000 under normal and Tatkal services.
Trap Operation and Arrest
After receiving the complaint, the Vigilance Bureau conducted a preliminary inquiry and organised a trap operation. During the operation, the accused was allegedly caught red-handed while accepting ₹6,000 from the complainant in the presence of official witnesses.
He was subsequently taken into custody.
Legal Action
A case has been registered against the accused under the Prevention of Corruption Act at the Vigilance Bureau police station in Ludhiana. Authorities said further investigation is ongoing to examine the full extent of the allegations.
Public Impact
The case highlights ongoing concerns around corruption in public services, particularly in educational institutions where students rely on timely access to official documents. Such actions by enforcement agencies are aimed at deterring malpractice and ensuring accountability.
Conclusion
With the arrest of the school principal, the Vigilance Bureau has reiterated its stance against corruption in public institutions, as investigations continue into the case. (With inputs from H.S.)
