Initiative aims to boost youth employability and align training with National Education Policy

Mumbai, April 16: The Maharashtra government has announced plans to establish 100 Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Skill Training Centres across the state to enhance employment opportunities for young people.
The announcement was made by Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who said the centres will be rolled out in phases and are expected to strengthen the state’s skill development ecosystem.
Expansion Across Urban Areas
As part of the plan, several centres will be set up in Mumbai, including its suburban regions. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been tasked with identifying suitable locations for the initiative.
Officials said discussions have already been held with Municipal Commissioner Ashwini Bhide to assess local needs and determine the types of vocational training that would benefit youth in the city.
Focus on Industry-Relevant Skills
The centres will offer training in various trades, with an emphasis on aligning skills with current market demands. The government aims to ensure that trainees are equipped with practical, job-ready competencies.
Integration with National Education Policy
According to the minister, the programme will be linked to the National Education Policy (NEP), which promotes skill-based learning and vocational education as part of mainstream education.
This integration is expected to create a pathway from training to employment, especially for young people seeking industry-relevant skills.
Public Impact
Skill development initiatives like this are aimed at addressing unemployment by improving employability among youth. By offering accessible training centres, the government seeks to bridge the gap between education and job opportunities.
Conclusion
The proposed network of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Skill Training Centres is part of Maharashtra’s broader effort to strengthen workforce readiness and support youth employment through structured and accessible skill development programmes. (With inputs from H.S.)
