Speaker highlights India–Nepal ties, stresses responsible journalism

Lucknow, April 27 (H.S.): A 20-member media delegation from Nepal, currently on a visit to India, met Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana on Monday and discussed media responsibility and democratic values.
During the interaction, Mahana emphasised the deep-rooted and cordial relations between India and Nepal, noting that ties between the two nations have remained strong since ancient times, strengthened by shared religious, cultural, and social connections.
Highlighting the role of the media, he said it is essential to verify facts thoroughly before presenting any information. He expressed concern over the growing tendency to highlight negativity due to competition for TRPs, adding that the media must strive to present a balanced and constructive perspective in society.
Describing the media as the fourth pillar of democracy, the Speaker said its responsibility is especially significant for journalists covering Parliament and Legislative Assemblies. He added that in a democratic system, both the ruling party and the opposition play equally important roles, and the Speaker is accountable to both.
Mahana also noted that the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly has evolved into a modern and digitalised institution, ensuring transparency and efficiency in its functioning.

During their visit, the delegation toured the Assembly building and various facilities. The Speaker briefed them on the functioning of the legislature, the law-making process, and the importance of democratic values.
