NDRF, district administration and volunteers engaged in high-alert rescue mission as oxygen support continues

Chandigarh, 15 May (H.S.): A massive rescue operation was underway in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district on Friday evening after a four-year-old boy fell into an uncovered borewell in Chak Samana village near Bhikhowal on the Hoshiarpur–Dasuya road.
According to officials, the child, identified as Gurkarn Singh alias Vanshu, son of Ravinder Singh, was playing near his house around 4:30 p.m. when he accidentally slipped into the open borewell.
Local residents immediately alerted authorities, following which police personnel, fire brigade teams and rescue officials rushed to the spot. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also deployed with specialised rescue equipment to assist in the operation.
Senior district officials, including Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain and Senior Superintendent of Police Sandeep Malik, reached the site and are personally supervising the rescue efforts.
Local volunteers and members of the Baba Deep Singh Sewa Dal have also joined the operation, assisting authorities in managing the site and supporting rescue personnel.
Child Reportedly Trapped Nearly 50 Feet Deep
Initial reports indicated that the child was first stuck at a depth of nearly 25 feet inside the borewell. However, during excavation efforts using heavy machinery, he reportedly slipped further down and is now believed to be trapped at approximately 50 feet inside a narrow pipe.
Rescue teams are continuously supplying oxygen to the child through dedicated pipelines while cameras inserted into the borewell are being used to monitor his condition in real time.
Authorities have started digging a parallel pit alongside the borewell in an attempt to safely reach the child. JCB machines, tractors and excavation equipment are being used to accelerate the rescue work.
Medical teams and ambulances have been stationed at the site to provide immediate emergency treatment once the child is brought out safely.
Leaders Visit Rescue Site
Punjab Cabinet Minister Dr Ravjot Singh and Member of Parliament Dr Raj Kumar Chabbewal also visited the location and reviewed the rescue arrangements.
Calling the incident deeply unfortunate, the leaders raised concerns over negligence, noting that the borewell had reportedly been constructed recently and left uncovered.
They expressed hope that the rescue operation would succeed and the child would be rescued safely at the earliest.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over abandoned and unsecured borewells in rural areas, an issue that has repeatedly led to fatal accidents involving children across different parts of the country.
