Assam Assembly likely to pass Uniform Civil Code Bill amid heated political debate

Guwahati, 27 May (H.S.): Several BJP leaders and legislators on Wednesday strongly defended the proposed implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam, describing it as a historic and progressive reform aimed at ensuring equal rights, justice and legal uniformity for all citizens.
The remarks were made by BJP ministers and MLAs while speaking to reporters inside the Assam Assembly premises, where discussions on the UCC Bill continued throughout the day. The BJP-led government is expected to pass the legislation in the Assembly later on Wednesday.
Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika questioned the continuation of laws that permit polygamy for certain communities, arguing that such provisions are discriminatory and outdated.

“Why should a man be allowed to marry four women without the consent of his wife? While Hindus can face imprisonment for having more than one wife, another section is still allowed to practice polygamy. Such unequal provisions should be abolished through the UCC,” Hazarika said.
BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi welcomed the proposed law and stressed that the legal framework of the country should remain equal for everyone, irrespective of religion or community.
“The UCC will ensure equal rights and justice for all communities. The law must remain the same for every citizen,” Kurmi stated.
MLA Pallab Lochan Das described the proposed legislation as the beginning of a new era and said it would help create a more balanced and progressive society for future generations.
BJP leader Diplu Ranjan Sharma termed the day significant for BJP workers and claimed the implementation of the UCC would put an end to what he described as “minority appeasement politics.”
Calling the development historic, BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia said the proposed law would help end injustice and discrimination allegedly faced by Muslim women under existing personal laws.
Meanwhile, MLA Manab Deka accused Opposition parties of resisting the UCC purely for political reasons.
“The Opposition is opposing the UCC only to pursue appeasement politics targeting a particular community,” Deka alleged.
The debate surrounding the Uniform Civil Code has intensified political discussions in Assam, with the BJP government presenting it as a reform measure aimed at legal equality, while Opposition parties and critics continue to raise concerns regarding its social and constitutional implications.
