Nari Shakti Vandan Padyatra Held in Prayagraj, MLA Siddharth Nath Singh Backs Women’s Reservation Law

Event highlights support for 33% reservation for women in legislatures under Nari Shakti Vandan Act

Prayagraj, April 16: A padyatra and public meeting were organised in Prayagraj’s City West Assembly constituency in support of the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, with BJP leaders and local representatives highlighting the significance of the legislation aimed at increasing women’s representation in legislatures.

The march began from Thakurdwara Sulem Sarai and concluded at Hanuman Vatika, where a सभा (public gathering) was held. Participants, including a large number of women, raised slogans in support of women’s empowerment and the recently enacted law.

Focus on Women’s Political Representation

Addressing the gathering, City West MLA Siddharth Nath Singh described the Nari Shakti Vandan Act as a major step toward enhancing women’s participation in governance. He said the provision of 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies would help ensure greater involvement of women in policymaking.

Singh referred to the legislation as a long-awaited reform and credited it with creating opportunities for women to play a more active role in democratic institutions.

Event Participation and Organisation

The event saw participation from several local leaders and public representatives, including Mayor Ganesh Kesarwani and members of the State Women Commission. Former mayor Abhilasha Gupta Nandi coordinated the programme.

The gathering was conducted by BJP Mahila Morcha State General Secretary Dr. Kritika Agarwal along with Metropolitan President Sanjay Gupta. Several councillors and women representatives were also present.

Context: Nari Shakti Vandan Act

The Nari Shakti Vandan Act, passed by Parliament in 2023, provides for 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies. The implementation of the reservation is linked to future delimitation exercises, which has been a point of discussion in political circles.

The law is seen as a significant step toward improving gender representation in India’s political system, where women remain underrepresented in elected bodies.

Public Impact

Supporters argue that increased representation of women can lead to more inclusive policymaking and better attention to issues affecting women and communities at large. Public events like padyatras are often used by political parties to mobilise awareness and support for such policies.

Conclusion

The padyatra and public meeting in Prayagraj reflect ongoing political outreach around the Nari Shakti Vandan Act, with leaders emphasising its potential to reshape women’s participation in governance in the years ahead. (With inputs from H.S.)
