Benchmark indices recover from sharp morning decline as buying interest supports mid-session trade

New Delhi, April 23: India’s benchmark equity indices staged a partial recovery on Thursday after witnessing a sharp decline in early trade, as investors stepped in to buy at lower levels amid volatile market conditions.
The BSE Sensex opened weak at 77,983.66, falling more than 500 points, and slipped further to an intraday low of 77,693.06. However, it later regained some ground to trade at 78,084.83 around 10 a.m., still down 431.66 points or 0.55%.
Similarly, the NSE Nifty started the session on a negative note at 24,202.35 and dropped to 24,134.80 before recovering to 24,287.45, trimming losses to 90.65 points or 0.37%.
Balanced Market Breadth
Market breadth remained evenly poised despite volatility. Out of 2,704 actively traded stocks, 1,349 were trading in the green while 1,355 declined, indicating a near-equal distribution between gainers and losers.
Among the 30 Sensex constituents, only eight stocks were trading higher, while the remaining were under pressure, reflecting cautious investor sentiment.
Sectoral Performance
Sector-wise, the market displayed mixed trends. Pharma and FMCG stocks offered some support, with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Cipla, Sun Pharmaceutical, ONGC, and Nestlé posting gains.
In contrast, weakness in IT, auto, and financial stocks dragged the indices lower. Tech Mahindra, Mahindra & Mahindra, Shriram Finance, Trent, and Eternus were among the major laggards.
Outlook
The partial recovery follows a weak close in the previous session, where both benchmark indices ended in the red due to broad-based selling.
Market participants are now closely watching whether the buying momentum sustains through the day or if profit-booking and global cues lead to renewed selling pressure in the later sessions.
