Political row erupts in Kerala amid Congress leadership discussions

Thrissur, 11 May (H.S.): A fresh political controversy has erupted in Kerala after a CPI(M) local leader was allegedly caught on CCTV installing a flex banner supporting senior Congress leader K.C. Venugopal amid ongoing discussions over the Congress party’s chief ministerial candidate in the state.
The incident took place at Vadanappally in Thrissur district, where a flex banner carrying the slogan “Let KC Lead” was erected in front of the Vadanappally Grama Panchayat office under the name “Save Congress.”
According to reports, CCTV visuals from the locality allegedly showed CPI(M) local committee member Aravassery Mohammed arriving late at night with the flex banner and installing it by the roadside before leaving the area.
Local sources stated that the banner, featuring a photograph of K.C. Venugopal, was put up around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Aravassery Mohammed is reportedly the husband of a Pattilangadi block member and is also associated with the CPI(M) local committee in Vadanappally.
The controversy intensified after Mohammed allegedly shared photographs of the flex banner on Facebook the following morning. Soon after, CCTV footage from nearby establishments surfaced, reportedly confirming his involvement in placing the banner.
The development triggered sharp political reactions in Thrissur district, with the UDF mandalam committee filing a formal police complaint accusing the CPI(M) of attempting to create confusion and embarrassment within the Congress party during a sensitive phase of leadership discussions.
UDF workers also staged protest demonstrations in the area, demanding action against those involved in the incident.
Congress leaders alleged that the CPI(M) was deliberately interfering in the Congress party’s internal affairs by attempting to fuel factional narratives surrounding the leadership issue.
In recent days, several flex banners supporting both K.C. Venugopal and Congress leader V.D. Satheesan have appeared across different parts of Thrissur district. Demonstrations backing Satheesan were also held in Thrissur city, Kodungallur, Perumbilavu and Irinjalakuda.
The latest incident has added a new political dimension to the ongoing debate, with opposition leaders accusing the CPI(M) of covertly encouraging divisions within the Congress camp ahead of crucial political decisions in Kerala.
