Kerala Consumer Rights Activist Dijo Kappan Passes Away at 68

Veteran public crusader known for legal advocacy and consumer protection efforts

Kottayam, May 1 (H.S.): Veteran public activist and consumer rights advocate Dijo Kappan passed away at the age of 68 on Friday. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Pala, where he had been undergoing treatment for several months following injuries sustained in a car accident.

A native of Edamattom in Bharananganam, Kappan was widely respected for his relentless efforts in championing consumer rights and public welfare. He played a key role in several legal battles aimed at ensuring accountability in public services and protecting consumer interests.

Kappan was associated with the Centre for Consumer Education as a trustee and contributed significantly to awareness initiatives and policy-level discussions on consumer protection.

Political and Public Life

He began his political journey with the Kerala Congress and emerged as a prominent student leader. In 1982, he served as the General Secretary of Kerala University and later held key positions in youth politics, including State President of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) Youth Front.

In 1998, Kappan stepped away from active politics to focus entirely on social causes. He remained actively involved in issues such as road safety and consumer rights until his final days.

Legacy

Known for his integrity and commitment to public service, Dijo Kappan leaves behind a lasting legacy of grassroots activism and civic engagement. His contributions have earned him widespread respect across political and social spheres.
