Delhi government approves major healthcare and medical education infrastructure project

New Delhi, 07 May (H.S.): The Delhi government has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art medical college along with separate hostels for male and female students at the Indira Gandhi Hospital complex in Dwarka at an estimated cost of ₹805.99 crore.
The approval was granted during the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. According to officials, the ambitious project is targeted for completion by 2028.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Chief Minister said the project will include a modern medical college campus featuring separate hostels for boys and girls, faculty housing, and an advanced academic block equipped with contemporary educational infrastructure.
She described the initiative as a significant step towards addressing Delhi’s increasing demand for qualified doctors while enhancing the overall quality of healthcare services in the national capital.
The proposed medical college will be developed in accordance with National Medical Commission (NMC) standards and will have the capacity to admit 250 MBBS students annually. Initially, teaching operations are expected to begin with 150 students.
According to the government, the project will be executed in multiple phases. The first phase includes the construction of the academic block, student hostels, and faculty residences over an area of nearly 1,17,246 square metres. The project will also feature a 34,000 square metre basement designated for parking and other essential facilities.
The multi-storey academic complex will include classrooms, laboratories, and other modern teaching amenities designed to support advanced medical education and training.
Separate hostels will be built to accommodate a large number of students, while faculty members will be provided with modern residential facilities within the campus premises.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has been entrusted with the construction work, while the Health and Family Welfare Department will oversee project monitoring and implementation.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta directed officials to maintain strict adherence to quality standards and ensure timely completion of the project. She further stated that procurement of medical equipment, recruitment of staff, university affiliations, and other operational arrangements would be undertaken in subsequent phases in line with NMC guidelines.
