Before the SUV wave swept across India, one name stood out for its rugged charm and go-anywhere attitude—Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Launched in the early 2010s, this beast wasn’t just a vehicle; it was a symbol of power, prestige, and performance. With its rally-bred DNA and bold design, the Pajero Sport carved a niche for itself among off-road enthusiasts and luxury SUV lovers alike.
Born from Rally Roots
The Pajero Sport was inspired by Mitsubishi’s legendary success in the Dakar Rally, where the original Pajero dominated for years. That racing heritage translated into a production SUV that could handle the harshest terrains while offering comfort on city roads. It was built on a ladder-frame chassis, giving it the strength and durability needed for serious off-roading.

Engine & Performance
Under the hood, the early Pajero Sport featured a 2.5L DI-Diesel engine that delivered 175.5 bhp at 4000 rpm and a massive 400 Nm of torque between 2000–2500 rpm. This powertrain was paired with a 5-speed manual transmission and Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD system, allowing drivers to switch between 2WD and 4WD modes on the fly.
- Top Speed: 190 km/h
- Acceleration (0–100 km/h): 14.5 seconds
- Fuel Efficiency: Around 13.5 km/l (ARAI certified)
- Fuel Tank Capacity: 70 litres
Design That Demanded Attention
The Pajero Sport’s design was bold and muscular. With a length of 4695 mm, width of 1815 mm, and height of 1840 mm, it had a commanding road presence. The high ground clearance of 215 mm and large alloy wheels made it look ready for any terrain.
Key exterior highlights:
- Chrome-accented front grille
- Projector headlamps with fog lights
- Roof rails and side steps
- Rear spoiler and sporty tail lamps

Comfort Meets Capability
Inside, the Pajero Sport was surprisingly refined. It offered a 7-seater layout, making it ideal for families and long-distance travel. The cabin featured:
- Automatic climate control
- Power steering and windows
- Leather upholstery
- Rear AC vents
- Adjustable driver seat
- Cruise control
- Touchscreen infotainment (in later variants)
Despite its rugged nature, the SUV didn’t compromise on comfort or convenience.

Safety & Build Quality
Mitsubishi built the Pajero Sport like a tank. It came equipped with:
- Dual front airbags
- ABS with EBD
- Collapsible steering column
- Ventilated disc brakes (front)
- Ventilated drum brakes (rear)
- 3-link rear suspension with coil springs for better ride quality
Its solid build and high kerb weight of 2040 kg gave it excellent stability on highways and rough roads alike.

Legacy That Lives On
Though discontinued in India, the Pajero Sport remains a cult favorite. It’s still sought after in the used car market for its reliability, off-road prowess, and timeless appeal. For many, it wasn’t just a car—it was a companion for life’s greatest adventures.
