Guwahati, 26 March (H.S.)- Crackdown between March 15 and March 26 led to confiscation of cash, narcotics, liquor, and suspected election inducements across the state.
Enforcement agencies in Assam have seized illegal cash, liquor, narcotic substances and other items worth more than ₹37 crore as part of intensified surveillance measures ahead of the poll period, officials said on Thursday.

The coordinated operations were conducted across the state between March 15 and March 26 to curb unlawful activities and maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Key Highlights of the Seizures
According to official data, the total value of confiscated items during the period stood at ₹3,724.53 lakh.
- Narcotic substances: ₹2,525.79 lakh
- Freebies and other items: ₹653.50 lakh
- Liquor: ₹256.71 lakh
- Precious metals: ₹205.29 lakh
- Cash: ₹83.23 lakh
The largest share of the seizures comprised narcotics, reflecting intensified action against suspected drug trafficking networks operating in different parts of the state.
Measures to Ensure Electoral Integrity
Officials said multiple enforcement bodies, including police and regulatory agencies, have been conducting joint operations to monitor the movement of illicit goods and unaccounted money.
Such items are often linked to attempts to influence voters during elections, making their detection and confiscation a key part of election preparedness.
Context and Background
In India, the Election Commission mandates strict monitoring of cash, liquor, drugs and inducements during election periods to prevent malpractice and ensure a level playing field among candidates.
States typically activate flying squads, surveillance teams and static checkpoints to track suspicious transactions and transport of prohibited materials.
Public Impact
Authorities believe these enforcement actions can help reduce the use of illegal inducements in elections and curb organised crime activities, particularly drug trafficking.
Enhanced vigilance is also intended to build public confidence in the fairness of the electoral process.
Officials indicated that surveillance and enforcement drives will continue in the coming weeks as the poll period progresses. Further seizures and preventive measures are expected as agencies intensify efforts to maintain law and order and uphold free and fair elections in Assam. (With inputs from H.S.)
