Police seek custody to probe possible conspiracy and identify accomplices; defence cites mental health concerns

New Delhi, April 7: A Delhi court has remanded Sarbjeet Singh, accused in the recent Delhi Assembly security breach, to eight days of police custody. The order was passed by the Tis Hazari Court after Delhi Police sought a 10-day remand to further investigate the incident.
Investigation Focus and Police Claims
During the hearing, Delhi Police told the court that custodial interrogation was necessary to uncover the alleged conspiracy behind the breach, including identifying any mastermind and additional accomplices.
Investigators informed the court that efforts are underway to locate Singh’s missing mobile phone, which they believe could provide crucial evidence. Police also noted concerns regarding his mental condition, though details were not elaborated in court.
Defence Arguments
Counsel for Sarbjeet Singh opposed the request for extended custody, stating that his client is undergoing treatment for mental health issues. The defence argued that Singh’s actions were not part of any planned conspiracy.
According to the lawyer, Singh had travelled from Pilibhit to Chandigarh around two weeks ago to visit his sister and had also gone to a gurdwara. He returned after learning that his nephew was missing.
The defence further claimed that Singh may have mistakenly entered the Delhi Assembly premises, believing it to be a gurdwara, and did not intend to breach security.
Court Observations
The court noted that Singh had driven himself over a considerable distance—from Pilibhit to Chandigarh and later to Delhi—before the incident. This observation formed part of the court’s consideration while granting police custody.
Details of the Security Breach
Delhi Police arrested Sarbjeet Singh on April 6 after he allegedly breached security barriers at VIP Gate No. 2 of the Delhi Assembly complex. According to police, he was wearing a mask when he entered the premises.
Investigators said Singh proceeded towards the office of Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta, placed a bouquet in the porch area, and then left the location. The sequence of events has raised questions about security protocols at the Assembly.
Police have since detained two additional individuals suspected to be connected to the incident.
Context and Security Concerns
The breach has drawn attention to security arrangements at key government institutions in the national capital. The Delhi Assembly is a high-security zone, and any unauthorised entry raises serious concerns about potential vulnerabilities.
Authorities are likely to review existing security measures in light of the incident.
Public Impact
Incidents involving breaches at sensitive government sites can have wider implications for public safety and institutional security. The ongoing investigation is expected to determine whether the breach was an isolated act or part of a larger plan.
The case also brings attention to the handling of accused persons with reported mental health concerns within the criminal justice system.
Conclusion
With the court granting eight days of police custody, investigators are expected to intensify questioning and gather further evidence, including tracing the missing phone and examining possible links to others involved. The findings of the probe will be crucial in determining the nature and intent behind the breach. (With inputs from H.S.)
