Three-day event in Lucknow focuses on innovation, cost-efficient farming and farmer welfare; scientists honoured under state scheme

Lucknow, April 8: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday said the Agricultural Science Congress-2026 would play a key role in strengthening the state’s agricultural sector and contribute to the vision of a developed Uttar Pradesh and India. He was speaking at the inauguration of the three-day event organised by the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Research Council (UPCAR) at the Sugarcane Research Institute in Lucknow.
During the inaugural session, the Chief Minister, along with Agriculture Minister Surya Pratap Shahi, honoured scientists selected under the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Scientist Honour Scheme for 2025–26.
Focus on Innovation and Cost-Effective Farming
Addressing scientists and stakeholders, Adityanath emphasised the need to adopt technology in agriculture while ensuring cost efficiency. He said future efforts should focus on increasing productivity with fewer resources and lower input costs.
He also highlighted the importance of transforming farms into centres of innovation, encouraging research and practical experimentation at the grassroots level. Stressing self-reliance, the Chief Minister called for the development of indigenous agricultural methods to address emerging challenges.
Government’s Emphasis on Farmer Welfare
The Chief Minister reiterated that farmer welfare remains central to the government’s agenda. He said that improving farmers’ incomes and ensuring their well-being is essential for broader economic and social progress.
Citing developments in the sugarcane sector, Adityanath said Uttar Pradesh currently accounts for a significant share of the country’s sugar production. He added that operational sugar mills have increased and timely payments to farmers have improved compared to previous years.
Claims on Agricultural Reforms
Adityanath said that earlier, farmers faced issues such as delayed payments, lack of resources, and limited access to infrastructure. He claimed that conditions have improved with better availability of electricity, water, seeds, and fertilisers.
He also pointed to policy measures aimed at supporting farmers across the agricultural value chain—from production to market access—stating that these initiatives have contributed to increased farm incomes.
Promoting Allied Activities and Natural Farming
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of integrating livestock and natural farming practices. He said the state government is providing financial assistance for cattle maintenance and suggested linking cow shelters with organic and natural farming models.
He also referred to efforts in regions like Bundelkhand, stating that certain longstanding agricultural challenges have been addressed through targeted interventions.
Context and Significance
The Agricultural Science Congress serves as a platform for scientists, policymakers, and agricultural experts to discuss innovations, challenges, and policy directions. Events like these aim to bridge the gap between research and field-level implementation, particularly in a state like Uttar Pradesh where agriculture plays a major role in the economy.
The Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Scientist Honour Scheme recognises contributions of researchers working towards improving agricultural productivity, sustainability, and farmer livelihoods.
Public Impact
For farmers, discussions around cost reduction, improved productivity, and access to technology can directly influence income levels and sustainability. Initiatives highlighted at such forums often shape future agricultural policies and schemes.
The emphasis on indigenous methods and natural farming may also impact long-term environmental sustainability and reduce dependency on external inputs.
Conclusion
The Agricultural Science Congress-2026 is expected to facilitate dialogue between experts and policymakers, helping shape future strategies for the agricultural sector in Uttar Pradesh. The focus on innovation, sustainability, and farmer welfare is likely to guide policy decisions in the coming years. (With inputs from H.S.)
